Workplace and Organizational Diversity
How We Can Help You
It is true that:
-
homogeneity breeds stagnation
-
hybrids are healthier than inbreds
-
keeping fit requires shaking up the
routine and introducing new elements to keep the body in shape
It is also true that diversity amongst individuals
means diversity in thinking.
Organizations who rely
on a diverse workforce are more likely to innovate, grow, and become
more vibrant, dynamic, and healthier than those who rely on cardboard
cut outs of each other.
Such well worn lines "that
we have always done it this way" (so why question whether it
is the right way), and "They are great team players because
we all think alike" (as they are just like me) do not really
cut it anymore when you are looking to innovate and grow.
Many times it takes a life-altering
event to question your perspectives. In many cases it is much more
subtle. For example, many of you have entertained guests from other
countries. Guests prompt us to question our perspectives and ways
from the questions they ask. Such prompting allows us to reflect
on things we take for granted and engage in new and improved ways
of doing things.
It often takes outsiders
and strangers for us to think differently. Facing this reality,
more businesses are becoming more diverse in their composition of
their staff and a reflection of the changing face of the world in
which we live. They are not waiting for an epiphany brought about
by perhaps a business failure for them to change their ways. Bringing
people to work together from a cross section of society is a strength
and opportunity for making the business successful, inclusive, and
prosperous. Whether they are a person with a disability, and/or
a person of a different culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual
orientation, age, lifestyle, experience, or personality, they all
help to support the enrichment and effectiveness of the workplace
and the people that they serve.
Furthermore, as more employers
feel the imminent skill shortages in their organizations, many are
taking more proactive steps to implement and espouse workplace diversity
initiatives in order to remain competitive, productive, and effective.
Using untapped, undiscovered, and underutilized talent that is right
under their noses is not only good for business, but it is good
for the community as a whole.
