Non-Profits
Non-profits are facing mounting demand on
their resources. At the same time, they are seeing increasing competition
from other non-profits for the ever-shrinking pool of funding from
traditional funding sources. Together, these factors are threatening
non-profits' sustainability and effectiveness in serving the community.
Several years ago, the founder of Compass
Diversity began implementing business and strategic plans for non-profit
organizations that employed her. At the time, many people in the
non-profit community and funders equated business plans with the
"evils of capitalism" - that is only making money at the
expense of serving the community (even though we were all hearing
from funders that we had to find other sources of income and/or
become self sufficient for years). The opposite was true. Having
a business and strategic plan in fact focussed on the needs of the
end users of the non-profit service and placed value, customer service,
adhering to high ethical standards, and realizing the non-profit's
mandate as critical outcomes in measuring the non-profit's effectiveness.
